MetaFilter's site and server can always use upgrades of hardware, software, and bandwidth, as well as more stable funding for continued support of its small but high-skilled moderation and backend team! If you'd like to chip in, you can donate to Metafilter.

Welcome to the MetaFilter Wiki!

Introduction

MetaFilter is one of the web's longest-running online communities; it has been operating since 1999, with a reputation for thoughtful and varied discussion and an exceptional dedication to attentive moderation and community management. It has been focused for more than twenty years on fulfilling the web's potential to bring people together and to create genuine, vibrant, good-hearted community spaces. Keeping a repository of community knowledge up to date and organized is only possible at this scale with the collaboration of many people.

About this wiki

What is a Wiki?

A Wiki is a special kind of user-editable website. The purpose of this Wiki is to produce and maintain a general guide for the community weblog called MetaFilter. Feel free to browse the guide as a reader/lurker and do not hesitate to contribute.

If you're interested in contributing, you'll need to register (see the top right of the page) after which you'll be able to edit. You can't hurt the wiki, but if you persistently try to break it, you might find yourself IP-banned. Please see the About Mefi Wiki page for more on what we're trying to achieve here and why. If you're still confused, check out the short guide What is a wiki and the Editing Help pages. We encourage you to participate in our Wiki.
