i think let's get this party started
this post in not making a note here
huge success and it's hard to know this day the lane since quality
a sale
this is episode one eighty six of the medical podcast a i am josh cortex in the lard and i'm guessing it and we have with us today as well
hi everyone
so we are ah we're we're we're finally getting a another person talking on the podcast again for the first time in forever and i'm very excited about that and ah thank you for your feedback
i think you've already in theory i haven't read it so i'm thank you for
we'd like have someone else and applied cast we hear you loud and clear ah but yeah so here we are we are we are podcasting and a and
that's that's it that's the that's the plan now the hell are you guys
attorney and you know if you missed it we also did a half months tied cast talking about vampires video games andy television show set friends
and we've got six comments in that thread so a lot of people were excited about it i think one of them most mind yeah i'm not sure any of them were about either the specific things either i think it's just people being supportive so
i i unannounced on promoted extremely niche discussion of a couple of media properties that's that's clearly the future of this stuff but ah
but yeah
well said we should probably talk about why we asked to be honest i cast aside that people asked specifically for this yeah well i mean that that seems like a good plan well there's the you know we are in the the post transition area is how i am you
to say we're in the post changed well this is it supposed to be an area for you yes yes feet
it must the beginning of it
am i
transition era out maybe we can all agree we're we're we're in the i'm unemployed ah era
and at the things i used to be doing a loop is doing many of them and ah one of the things i used to be doing was owning the the company and just mean you're doing pat and deadline
how's that going well i mean you oh did you know every everything else i have this stock transfer but the business isn't license and my name were still yeah we should be able to take care of that we
yes we
just you know i wasn't going to bring it up you right now the other yeah no it's it's it's it's it's dangerous for me to get into anything that involves me getting shit done that a real own goal on my part but the fact that it's summer yeah it's fucking warm here too
but yeah i'm so yeah so you too
thanks students if you you get you to to both know more about what's going on i met a in the last couple of weeks than i do that's very weird and exciting and glad to have you here to talk about it
your experiences and what thought we should talk about loop a little bit first because i firmly believe people are probably bored with me and downs of my life but we don't yet know anything about the ups and downs of loops life and loop if you care to share a you know give us yeah you know you're
thirty you're thirty second loop elevator pitch and we can go from there that's actually funny because i mean i've been here for a while now right now when they think a i've been like super quiet and i'm one of those people who are in the background all the time and so what what can i tell you in the past fifteen years of my life
life i literally anything in my life has been internet or later i mean most of my jobs have come from the internet most of my friends relations everything in that case a look into why i am here to cause i've always known about i mean i've known about medical through for like ten years
but always lurking never had a profile it was like oh go check this out interesting conversation and then when i realized that there was an opening for a place to work their outlets like you ate this is amazing and then well things have developed i'm here and and i mean to me is least
they are says quite nice and quite interesting and because you loved with the things they do believe in which is i am from a generation that was basically raised with the internet in how it happened right and to me it's one of those things would i so it from being
in this thing know loaded that was very promising and we expected the world to be a better place
on the floor you with things
so i'm one of those believers who think that there are still other work to do to make the internet a better place right and i actually think that this was one of the place able believe the blazes i believe in
that's absolutely
right no that's pretty much what i have
i'm just i'm looking at your profile and noticed you have a birthday coming up and a couple of months
yeah i'm a leo
i'm afraid i'll sell my birthday a couple of weeks after yours
there you go didn't know them either with them atop either way i don't believe in astrology
i mentioned this could because people care and i hope this thing where it well if you care about the bit of data i'm going to provide it myself i don't even really know what that means
all i know is the virgo sort of like uptight neat freaks which is like both kind of man absolutely kind of not me ah and more to the point like my birthday i believe this year is on american labor day which is like kind of fake labour day a year compared to may first and ah and this year like
every year i always do this thing called that i called the virgo month of leisure
like you're uptight eleven months a year take this one month to relax and then i always comment on what a joke it is that it's always the busiest months of the year save maybe the holidays and it's just always very funny
you know what's actually interesting for me because there is a save that by the end of august always in the past two years it's a beef your birth of my entire ear so it's generally like my birthday eat something that i get to celebrate or do something about it by like me put them
rivers oh yeah yeah yeah
with i mean there's no way around it
yeah i think this yeah
i mean i think that's good though i think having a birthday mountains is
i don't know i mean i know there's sit back and forth on ask them to filter about how much grown ups should celebrate their birthdays but i gotta say i am definitely on like team birthday celebration i mean i i think they should celebrate them as much as they want to either there's there's obviously no moral absolutes here it's like you know do what feels good for you
what if someone is doing something that you don't think you would do don't do it but you know my and think it's a cultural thing around that because for example here here where i come from costa rica
everybody's us actually the older you get the more important it is in
my second family heirs from day one i mean we're not lot of time but they are their life i'm only i was raised with them and with them as the other way around you just dumb celebrate them ever right not even for children no not a role and looked at it
for cultural thing where how they used to liberate things it was like when you get married for example and they are lecturers so you will give precedence to people who go to your wedding ceremony and i'm like using it the other way around
and so yeah i i do think that it's one of those things that up
you can adjust to your culture and the people around you and not the end of the day just have fun and enjoy it and the best way you can
yeah exactly i can the united states the understanding it's like birthdays or more for children and i'm just always like
why like
we can all do a thing
as of now i would say anything that you can celebrate go ahead and do it because i joke we need to celebrate things it doesn't matter how little they are
yeah lining lining up those w's i think is
how how i read it on the internet and how i think it is important
and that's what to me it's interesting because i mean if what if the conversations i've been having with everyone and recently it's this thing where i remember when i don't know we used to be worried about climate change than a couple more things
like capitalism and stuff like that and now it's like no you don't have three or four things you have like eighteen good luck right though you don't have the luxury of only worrying about capitalism right now exactly so that to me also means that every little thing that you have in life that you can actually enjoy
do it so for example when it comes to the birthday for me it's one of the important things where i am like i dunno if i want to celebrate it but having a refund to actually get together with the people i care i will be like yeah i'm totally celebrating my birthday actually it's just protect show and it's a way to get them together
yeah yeah yeah yeah exactly and the before times a lotta times i'd be like alright we're having a big dinner out at you know one of the few local restaurants and it's on me because it's not actually it's pretty hard to run up a huge tab it and if the local restaurant
and you know not not a big outlay everybody gets kind of the one day hook up and then everybody gets to kind of hang out with each other like i'm i'm waiting for that to be a thing we can sort of safely do
ah moving moving forward like i'm still like pretty much know to indoor dining but like we're in outdoor dining weather and a lot of our restaurants finally have sidewalk
service and yeah we'll we'll see a couple of months
one of the things they do oh look is cooking cause i know that the whenever i say i'm going to cook something people will show up
so yeah that's that's my way to actually convince people to come and i'm like yup i'm making something whatever it is pay yeah you name it but people will show up if they know there was food
oh my gosh patch it's been so long
well i mean i've been trying to convince you to come here for a while i know what they think oh july and other stuff above your profession not mine gotta say you know i have definitely my my my my rule for me right now it's like no more airports no more airplanes until things stop being so unreasonable
well both in terms of call of it and like stopping and everything else but that it's very tempting and i have people i'm friends of mine who live in my town here which is you know small town forty five hundred people and they have a place in costa rica that i think they like every being be a lot of the time i don't know where it is
i'll figure out where it is but there but they've been forever like it
and i'm like oh i haven't been to costa rica since i was in my twenties
also do is the thing we're in costa rica you are never over three or four hours away from anything in that's weird i mean if you have to drive three hours or four hours inflict it's far other the right right pretty much over that it's winter where away so
which is glorious you can you can go to the mountains you can go to the ocean you can go to ah yes and and limit the amount the amount of bird watching i could do there was a truly like just like more different kinds of humming birds we have like two kinds of humming birds here these graves see i
yet we i say mentioned i just came back from mexico city right i have been there before and it didn't strike me as much before but this time i was like oh so city yes books like nature and stuff i i forgot since i've been stuck in costa rica for so long to do
does that make i forgot how much i got to use to nature and know when i'm traveling i am like oh now i through system now i do understand that this is had him
yeah i went to montreal for a a a a work trip a little over a month ago and
you know much else lovely and the people are lovely but it was like a city and i just thought it was fun to walk around it was fun to have like a place you could get food at ten pm like you know but i had to re acquaint myself with traffic and like just congestion you know there's people everywhere even though like
you know masking was pretty good and also like just you know my kingdom for a tree to stand under after a while just because it was very it was very concrete and that kind of not how it is here
though i have to admit to one of the things that i've been missing a lot since i been stuck in ghost rica for so long it's behind me sexual seasons i mean to suit needs to see the full i mean right now the things that to me and threatened me crazy is knowing that we're in the middle of the summer and
here it's like saucers will be always like five six pm that's it right and you have your homes day during the summer i moved that so much right yeah there's costa rica
enough more south of here you don't get the big long stretches from here's your gets two things it's either rainy or not so rainy that grandma
there is no folders no winter there is no summer there is no nothing it's like turn those springs something like that yeah well i'm actually i was nice but i means that i didn't really think about that that much but yeah the length of your day doesn't change the way it does appear
like josh remind me i am further north than you are or know i'm i'm about forty four i don't remember all have talking about i think i'll look actually i felt the same yeah i wonder if that we just had solstice and it means that you know longest day of the year and you know it's glorious
thing you know they're still be enough light to kind of walk around ah
you know at nine pm
and you know it's been a little too hot this week but like like you know that it's gonna turn around rate like for for day that it's too hot this summer there will be a days it's too cold in the winter and you can kind of flip flop back and forth but at least you know things are they're going to change and may
makes it easier to deal with whatever stupid whether you're dealing with are your short days or europe whatever i don't know when the sun comes up because boy i'm not around to see it but to set up
like
i'm gonna say i'm based on a google maps and it's mercator projection i am in fact a couple of degrees farther north and how interesting i mean that makes sense just yet but i'm never sure i always know it's just not what i expect base yeah well i mean it's so much know your where you are
our than it ever is here i'm like it's not my latitude it's that were like by the ocean well i mean you're by the ocean as much as we are almost but like we've got the cascades right here and it's not so much with a mountain of micro climate over in new england the ocean
to me that's the ocean
pacific northwest they repainted the space needle orange the thing i i don't know what i heard shop i was very excited up you know things i know nothing about and didn't think i cared until i found out that i cared
no no no
yes no that's about seattle news site been a while but i were littered not to know like oh did they paint their nice little you know showpiece good for them
is it true is that really like a portland seattle kind of odd i'm not really i don't think so
i'm i think there's like if there is anything in terms of like sort of rivals through these is probably one of those things where like smaller college team has a rival you re with like a ib league team in the league was never fucking heard of them yet but you know it's not quite that much of disparity with seattle and portland but sales like it's the bigger city
i'm so what say it it's it's the bigger city of the two for sure but yeah it's definitely got more weight to throw around if you're going to get into like some sort of like city influence bullshit but what do they got they got frazier and we've got portland area that sounds a lot better until i actually said out loud
oh man hates us so much
he said everything and iraq accurate rating yeah yeah
yeah
which is why i don't know anything else about portland area well it's fine i barely watched it although it's in our flag means death and i just user you manage to ignore him and
enjoy that show nonetheless
a lot of people were in our placements i enjoyed it as a sort of like comedy cameo
the sort of show of the same way the men delorean was located doing that like a bunch of comedians have just had like five minute parts in an episode of medullary him arms in elaborate makeup or their faces covered yeah like a
who was it like a bunch of people bunch of people posing as like just a guy giving them a ride at some point though i think he gets blown up like on screen for like two minutes and gets a line and then you said right
hey brian vogler him plus saying it's like the world's biggest nerd so that might have been
as there is a lot of fucking star wars nerds and the comedy world through like showed up on those shows and then the calf bill burr who is like a major character in like the second season he was like in two different episodes basically playing bill burns your life
beyond this you know fuck you i'm from boston
i somehow never started watching season three and i don't know why was in three come up i if it has whatever it was after the bill burr i mean yeah like i just did yeah i think that was season two and i don't know i don't know what they what season three i should probably make sure i even know what i'm talking about has succession
call back anyway
we ended up
have you been watching anything in particular loop any any media contacts do you want to go off on a tangent about
i mean the thing is recently i haven't been watching as much tv because it's two things first lots of work in second i mean a boy in queens because of the thunder me specifically had been more like okay go for a walk go five nature however there is a thing that
to me if i love west world and actually they just set a dog fourth season yes
yeah just a reference about being back on i i got about halfway through the second season and unlike got distracted and that was not a good season to get distracted halfway through cause like it's clearly two different timelines in two different bernards and something going on and i'm just got to start from the start of that season again to like figure out what the hell's up i totally read
commended to me it's the acting that actually i love and then science fiction like i'm totally into science fiction then aside from wicked west or now that i mention science fiction i tried to watch the station that they made a foundation from isaac asked me off
yeah yeah it's interesting i mean what they do is kind of tried to go well we are just things that are not covered in the books the books are very about what happens but the the actual series or about how it happens right
and it seemed to but i mean there is this thing then when you read a book then you see the station you will never be satisfied rights
laughter
so yeah i mean those are the two things that comes to my mind recently ultimate than that i have been avoiding screens i mean most of what i do at this point is reading but i was watching tv it's not so much
i had it right on mantle our animal oh yeah yeah i have i have only seen the first season and so second season i guess the build bar seats and ah is what i haven't seen yet and and the third season it's been announced but not not completed all right
but others like our livers show update
lupin i are both fans of space westerns according to wikipedia
lot like yeah west from mental delorean fire escape which i loved the ants which i loved the books and was deeply unsatisfied with the show and firefly
i'm i'm about let's see i'm for books into the the expanse books all and they enjoyed it i'm just sort of taking it as the holds come along so every two months i read another one
but ah but that works out okay i'm i'm really enjoying it i'm i'm really curious to see where the the book series goes because i liked the show a lot but i started with the show and i still felt like the show just really caught out while wrapped up in a way it was like i'm so like it feels and then show
things like yeah the show ended and it ended but like the last book just came out fairly reeks yeah yeah yeah i know the show ended i'm i feel like fairly abruptly like it feels like maybe they during the decided not to keep making seasons or found out they weren't going to be able to do so on the terms i wanted i don't know i haven't followed the production at all but it if
don't like it felt like hitting stop a you know sort of like right on ok now it's over
so i'm curious as to where the books ago
i think you'll like them i finished the mars trilogy and i am just been burning through books and i feel like maybe maybe as a most foundation like would be a good next set of books cause i need those
the mars trilogy was good but i didn't love it but i tend to love that the books were very very long
and and i know that's just a weird thing to like go choosing your reading from but like you know i am i'm a there's something about having the sort of
long runway on something if you get into it and you can just sort of stick with it you know i i always had trouble with short story anthologies about that i didn't enjoy the short stories but like you know i didn't sort of get in a groove is much like i had to flick mix it up again every like you know twelve or twenty or thirty pages yeah exactly especially you know
depending on how uneven the sort of selection is or why they're all sort of selected together kind yet
yeah so i mean i'm also an album person like a entire discography brazil like i tend to like find that album i like and listen to it a bunch and and if you know it's not a fluke by that band like do that for each of their other albums and eventually like you know spend a ton of time with that those individual albums in
those artist rather than doing sort of like playlist be a shuffle this thing right or like spot five find me more music like this one
yeah which can be nice i mean like it it's nice to discover new stuff instead of just be stuck in like you know my grind but uh but also a lot of the times they're recommending stuff i'm like no no no no no no well i mean myself like high perfect saved quite easily with things so when the gospel music and so like oh that sounds nice lips
listen to the whole thing in less listen to everything they have ever done side projects and everything and then if something in any subject these scenes was to me i'm the type of person who will be at three am reading all the wikipedia pages that are related to that and being like why am i now an expert on
something that i didn't know anything about yesterday
well and that's a good quality to have especially if your next quality is not now i've got to get on the internet at argue with other people who have thirty years experience but i haven't read the wikipedia all night
well actually that's the thing for me in any platform i've ever used in most cases i tend to enjoy more lurking reading and listening to what people have to say i even though i have strong opinions on not the person who will go into long discussions about
both things mostly because i mean a lot of the time make know where people are coming from and what it means to them right so just enjoy more just seen it on relaxing and say in what happens in britain to there that people have to say
and that's a
it's it's a health equality on the internet a healthy quality for a working with other people on the internet to a certain degree cause i do think that
the people who are vocal help shape perspectives right yeah that's what we've you'll have something important to say it's important for people to us who leaves into that and that's to me part of the beauty of the internet so to a certain degree right they mean you when you go when two men filter i get
to read people's perspective some things that i am like oh it never crossed my mind that you can see it this way interest in and i might have some of those i just don't get to showed them as much
ah well yeah and that's like i i think that's a big part of it was like recognizing like there is
the value in and the need for like actually saying okay this is something you know i have feelings about and this is like important to be clear where i'm coming from and then there's the instinct to like oh but now there's a text box and i could put words into it and like finding the difference between just reflexively putting words out there and finding that
the moment we're hey this is going to be a contribution it's you know described like that it sounds really fucking trivial but like that's a huge part of what's tricky about the internet and part of why moderation is necessary and part of why moderation is tricky and part of why throwing a whole bunch of people on to a worldwide network and just letting things happen
sometimes it doesn't go great that's partly because yeah like having that sense of like oh this was listening time oh this is actually need to speak time as you listen mentioned that it's to me it's interesting because for example so right now i'm hosting a friend who she is from ghosts where he but see is a leaving and being
land so she came for the summer here and so her my partner and myself the three of us pretty much sense it gives them the same type of content but we use different sites for debt and you cannot send than you can easily tell how the behavior isn't terribly
front right right
same same same information different behavior in that pills a little old how communities are built in how people perceive this things and how even think no tree shapes how you do things one of the things that i particularly love about met a filter is this thing that it's not game if
right in any way right while you know other sites i wouldn't say which ones where every day
that's it's obvious to i but then i live sites where people no longer care it's not anymore both what they have to say it's more about how to make people how do i get people to like what i'm saying and yeah and yeah nobody says anything seriously anymore and those places right and i'm like
come on i want to see the real thing right all right or something you actually care about and instead of something that you know designed to provoke a response and i think that sort of harkens back to what you were saying before i knew about the idea of um
you're not worrying about capitalism like a part of part of what we get from the internet it's the fact that there are a whole bunch of people essentially using it as like um resource extraction and in various ways right that they that they not only gave him a five but they sort of fine tuned for engagement in order to do whatever other
sort of capitalistic things that they're that they're trying to do and i think that's why you see you know businesses like twitter that are always kind of tweaking their algorithms or whatever facebook i'd just something happened on facebook this week i'm which changed like i use this sort of facebook native ads
lock are saying and something changed so all of a sudden it wasn't working the way it used to be and i was just you know facebook is like has a lot of utility for me interacting with local people right because they are not yet another social media and that's where they put their events and all of the sudden i was seeing a facebook that was full of ads and i hadn't before
and i was like oh my gosh is this what people are dealing with
those who are highly acclaimed monitors the reasons yes yeah on a day to day basis this is wild you know because so much of it was like you know recommendations because you liked this one thing maybe you want to hear about like catholic church sex abuse and i was like why why
like
but you know that i think effect gauge middle a interfering with a kid and you know stuff for know if if these servers because there is a spring or to me it all comes on to remedy models that
your wheels human fucked it up at some boring
like if they can't the health ago so where there where there was a thing i mean to me it's super clear cause look simple we were using the internet to ford right there and right now we don't have a richer and we have over right which has served it's a lot more revenue but i love less community and
q mundane into it
yeah there and you said it with a area and beat and stuff like that all of the services that are mostly both the money and none of the community behind us and and to meet on tinder so many things right
right i i'm still a firm believer in the early stages of beams were no i mean of course that's why i'm here
good yeah i mean it's to me shook him in and one of the things that's to me it was hard to to come to terms with who was with for example ah i think it's love this year we're luckier i'm not entirely sure the the most visited the website in the world
used to be google and now i think it's this year you'd actually got to eat picked up where i don't even know how to count
i get to see some gum frank but i'm like no more i took to younger generations they are like yeah i learned this through ticked up right and i'm like well did you actually chicken any of the screws loser an even know that
l a lot i actually learned about love little as far as i know i sound like a weird cranky librarian hair but like oh my gosh
it is it is not an attribution heavy culture i like i love to talk i do like easily my favorite social media are the sort of platform among the big corporate social media platforms in terms of me just enjoying spending time fucking around on it but yeah it's like it's almost part of what works
about it is like there is zero friction for things like writing things up an add up hating him being beautiful like no that's not even culturally in the lingo of object talking to another market crazy but
well seeing what we're seeing in the united states right where you know the supreme court made their decision based on facts that actually weren't true but somebody said they were true and so they're like move sounds right this was the prayer in school you know that the coach kinda guy and if you don't know more about it you don't have to
but essentially you know that the guy who was the coach was like oh no i never you know i only pray on my own and people are welcome to pray with me and then there's like literally a photograph that's sort of my are included which was like nope this is you and your team like hello now yeah
so i wait for him later concerned about that you know i don't want to be in a post factual world but
it's actually interesting because i've been thinking about that a lot and one of the things they are i was a soldier is this concept up to me has has been in my my for the past two weeks or a couple of moms probably which is hosted node to node you become stress burton right so i use red
and glasses and it gets to a point where it's no longer something to use it becomes part of how i see things and it becomes part of myself rape shirt and with a little dog for your matic at that point exactly in that happens to every kind of technology we have i mean from a peak that we used to reach things
to the social media we used to f phone to all of this and so i'm i'm totally bare with you and the things that are facts do matter and how in that to me it's important
it's hard to see how to see a world where people will say anything they want to put where are you coming from do you actually have anything to look it up people are not really asking that anymore in many places rights that are older replaces word that still happens but that to me it it's a shift
that i think
if it's i'm worried about that a lot yeah it's like yeah it's it's it's not even a nobody does it it's it's the continuing shift away from it as any kind of reinforced expectation and that's that's the fucking hard thing because like if not a bunch of people like getting up one day decide say you know what i'm tired of facts you know
like everyone's just being a person and some people are being shitty people with some times now that you're times but even most of the people who are being shitty are more being shitty because of the book as a product of like the system and the environment that they have been exposed to and that environment is not doing a good job of helping
and
people not being shitty and knee jerky and reactionary and whatnot and like
it's
it's so hard to figure out how to counter this kind of trend that is you know driven more by the the weird circumstances are changing technology and profit motive and there's
there is no money behind incentivizing being a well informed reader and citizen basically like well actually sorry to interrupt you will do if that and let us know
well that to me actually and striking strikes point that it's super important to me about what is going on with the side right now which is i've seen websites and things i care about at similar stages already right which is like from here what do we do and one of the things that i've seen happening all the time
and if they start making decisions on how to monetize and they either go well or go wrong but they changed the entire blueprint of what the actual survey's website or product to us yeah let's say are you no longer entirely it gosh yes
from that exactly i mean it's one of those things where as the seasonal good to actually bring power back to the community to actually make it more what you like a lift it's a thing that believe it or not never happens
never in the history of internet you'll see how they'll say yes it's like take hold of beauty of it and then first for it into a business model that doesn't go anywhere though no humanity in any way ah so i particularly one of the things why i show up to work every single day it's because in the
the way i see it we're actually making an effort to actually make bit of food really looking for more men are filter by allowing members such we have the same there
to me it's one of the things that they turn up rarely rarely the us
yeah and i weren't really hoping i think all three of us to be able to do kind of a low level subtle it to a little bit more you know community steering wheel then met a filter as had before up with the idea that it should be
ron you know more by the community which isn't to say like the community clocks in and clocks out maybe like loop does or you know josh did or i'm supposed to sorry josh i keep telling you josh and not cortex i hope you don't mind i both have always been fine okay the other and the only thing that's ever weird is like a couple of times but feel like in in
sir earlier this year a couple of times someone who does not know me was really part of the thing josh i'm a lard as like well okay that's my name i'm not shy about it but also
and you know kinda like yeah my early
yeah yeah yeah you get down here yeah we we don't have a use my full name to point out how angry you are at me sort of relationship like you can be that angry at me but like there's other places on the internet but i know this josh but what's your name
edward
wow
yeah i know any of that i i never will i mean
i never use it i've i've always only ever gone by josh too and i very recently i may have set us on a previous podcast but like there's good food carts around here it's one of the things i like about my neighborhood and you know busy busy food cart pod where there's like twelve different food carts and people leaving and whatnot they're going to yell your name from somewhere and not everybody yells very loud and shot
sounds like like it's nothing it's just it's it's it's an awesome down with some wind around it
i've been going i've been saying when they're like oh what do you want to you know oh what's your name on joshua at the food course not cause that's three syllables that's that's a nuclear free for your real first it really is joshua yeah i'm but a but it it it it carries you know like they they have to hit three syllables so there is like a melody to it rather than just like
jess is absolutely unbearable like if i hear people talking in a group i always think they're saying like if they say just and i think they're saying my name if i say gas and and then we've got to do that how do you spell it hokey pokey for third
funny cause this this thing where i mean at this point they just allow people to pronounce it however they one right but i mean it's it's it's interesting because actually if your technical about it it's actually pronounced new
but that this once everybody pronounces loop which be
hey wait wait and wait again
new new
no she has just knew
yeah
yes
good to know that
don't worry i mean at this point they've done that on staten island
like that anymore
which by the way seen by the way in case you didn't know that sexually a wolf infringe
hey lupine hey
mind blown this is great
so glad we had this conversation
that's how you get to know people yeah
i'm one of those who i'm i'm an open book if you get to talk to me but otherwise i'm a very quiet person i guess
why don't you get me to talk i don't stop i mean
that's always been my experience with like like doing social situation stuff like i don't i wouldn't say that i would like an introvert but like i'm definitely an introvert until we've talked for five minutes in terms of instincts
i'm
and then and then like yeah i will as long term listening to this podcast know just absolutely not shut up but totally i'll take that literally and you have to like hit that first checkpoints right tell me a little bit about gnomic trash wow oh well
man i have feelings about gnomic these days like not know make itself but like dumb more bullshit has like undermined the basic institutional functionality of a notion open democracy the more a game it's about sort of satirical you examining democracy does not feel like anything i'm ever gonna want to play game
in my life with the guy oh yeah let's uh
let's see how this falls apart and no mic yeah i was triggers you are
that said a guy that runs our newspaper in town and you know we were talking about this or that and i was like well yeah you know i talking to him like you are friendly and chatty he's like oh no i hate people and i'm like
no you don't we're having a great conversation and he's like i like you and i'm like you don't hate people you're just shy like you just before he get to know people he just pretends to like people because he wants those pictures of spiderman
j jonah jamieson i don't know i was just for saying space
please continue
but like it was interesting china sort of delineate like what's interpret extrovert and watch just kind of shy versus outgoing yeah you know what i mean like like i can be i'm less initially shy with people than i used to be because i would rather get along with people than
have them be like she's weird
to the extent that i can control that i'm and and part of that does involve kind of like you idle chitchat and how's the weather and how's it going in whatever and i used to just resent it and hate it and like if you read us minnesota you'll see a lot of people who resent it and hate at azure i'm you know but once i sort of figure
no doubt kind of the social purpose of it acted make it make sense to me it's become something that most of the time unless i'm exhausted you know i actually enjoy and like you know tim who runs the newspaper like he talks to everybody all the time like he goes he takes photographs for the paper which is interesting that you mentioned it and you know
so he has to go into strange situations constantly and be able to be like hey but he's got a status position which i think makes it easier for him so that one of the things here are not doing is jockeying for you know are you more important than me am i more important than you like confused and confusing i'm i'm just happy he likes me and i'm waiting
and for you know and i know they'd be a little bit off at the newspaper and i'm worried eventually they're going to regret it
and now that you say that actually to me because i'm one of those people who are like i don't actually like people on till i get to know them right yeah yeah and i think it's because of religious dress threshold where you actually have to develop empathy right i know where you're coming from
from invest to me it's something that that as a generality i i can have it that easily
but when i actually engage with someone i it if you didn't totally changes which i think it's it's it's just really interesting it goes cause that's how you actually engage with people how you change your mind about how you see things was when you actually engage with them right yeah yeah yeah you have a muscle you flags
kind of and better at it that's that this is
conversation about this stuff always remind me of a sort of meet ups which i miss and resent the fucking pandemic flu and talking while you are rebuilding actually yeah yeah i'm yeah everybody must be having a reboot my computer because my voice turned into a robot that all happened before we started
because of this old fucking mac workstation the last ah the last laugh computer a metal filter ever would have paid for and it's been a few years now and i finally got rid of mine yeah
mm mm mm
mm
mm mm mm mm mm
mm
one of the things i really like about meet ups for a filter is and this probably applies to other kinds of meat up as well but for me medical is by far and away the most common reason i've ever gone to a meet up with random people from the internet or whatever
is like you have a starting point and you know whether whether i should describe myself as an introvert or just describe myself as someone who has anxiety and his bad at initiating small talk either way that's one of the challenges of like sitting down with people you don't know already and just like starting
to socialize with like
you have to break the ice you have to get things rolling and one what you have in common is like literally anything anybody remembers that happened on medical during the last week or month that's a lot of content that you know from the moment you walk in the door you have is a shared point of interest which is great cause like it's not even like oh what if i personally been doing that in this cry
pursuit we have in common like which is great when you have that but like it can be challenging oh but i haven't really done anything lately but if it's like medical or other people have done plenty of stuff on metal filter you can talk about like hey did you see that thread and if that's yes okay we'll talk about if no let me tell you about it like it's such an easy on ramp um and it's one of the things that just sort of gets you
you talking in a way that i really kind of appreciate because it lets cause yeah people can sort of come out of their shell when they have something to talk about that doesn't feel effortful and that's a big thing like that's like i like
this is the first time you've like been on a podcast with us for like a we are going on fifty minutes now and i feel like the first five minutes was kind of like well okay we've got to figure out what what is the riddle like we're not saying i love but there's this like what is the rhythm what are we gonna talk about it cetera et cetera it feels a little bit stilted and at this point we're cross talking over each other very naturally
because we sort of we we found that like that thing
that's not even like the it's not the first conversation you'd ipad we've had a bunch of fucking zoom calls the last couple of years
it's it's a different context and i don't know i i think it's great because you get people opened up and then nothing you're talking about what the empathy it's a lot easier to develop a sense of empathy for other people when you start engaging in sort of like a natural sort of i'm interested in what this person is saying and how they're thinking way instead of like i've got to figure out what i have to say
like that's not a good place to try and find him from that
earlier i think it's actually one it's one of those muscles that you actually have to exercise right yeah yeah oh for me it's been what like fourteen now thirteen years working remotely i mean they i rarely get to see people so one of the things that i realize as the unit to find
ways to connect with people even though you won't see them face to face all the time where you stuck to that of just thirty minutes in one month right so how do you you might humanize that and that's so important because if we are not able to do that it's we're in trouble as us humans in general you
that's the way i see it
let's go ahead no no no no you go ahead know it just crossed my mind cause it made me remember at a previous undisclosed website i used to work for
there they have like dirt member base was so passionate and so there was this particular person who love yup that's perfect definition of the word troll right and one of the last leaf buffet of people you could ever ducked
to them line
and then one day they came to costa rica so we met face to face we hit it off right away and we were grades grade friends in like five minutes white cause you get to humanize them for the first time ever ripe you realize that we have that thing come we have we're both passionate about this winter
just go about it different ways and so have ended up a little space to actually understand that we actually have more in common the law way of thing we would do that changes a lot to me
well and that is definitely happened to me at like you know historic met a filter be going back to filter maps or whatever fifteen years something like that sixteen seventeen like because we had them in seattle when i was still you know yeah another filter person there and the nineties um and you know i mean people who are like
right around there very little bit the nineties when you could have been a medical report and i guess i guess sorry i'm thinking of like my own block which has i guess like the early odds than ah but meeting people who had like let's say kind of us are back
not sure if this person is even really real really espousing their real beliefs opinions on the site and then getting to meet them and either being like oh i get it like this person it's either extremely socially anxious for you know has this or that concern which is why they present themselves in that way
only change at least for me and especially for like you know that and moderator me a changed the whole vibe of how i felt like that person was interacting yeah well it it it's such a god it's such a weird interesting complicated thing i would say for me one of the things that like
for better and for worse one of the things for me is like i've always felt i have like a pretty decent capability to get ended up for like three of mine and head space empathetic space with people without necessarily a ton of info like you know i mean just a little of both at different times
been involved in lengthy parents article conversations with me where i'm trying to sort of unpack someone's motivations to try and understand where they might be coming from and what might be the point of miscommunication and how we can sort of like gap that and whatnot and like that part is not necessarily difficult for me but figure out how to approach like the problem
after having done up theorizing is is trickier because people are people to one of the things is a real recurring thing is i can develop this sense that like i think i know where this person is coming from but unless they feel like they know where i'm coming from or understand or believe that i have a sense of where they're coming from that doesn't matter cause they're gonna be operating from a point of sort of like so
all protection of defensiveness about it like that's one of the things you see with people who are shitty like you know in a specific context but you meet them and it turns out they're not like just actual shit had just like it's usually they don't
operate from a position where they assume they will be understood or where they assume they will be given the benefit of the doubt or or
be met equally and stuff and like what's that's one of the things that i actually admire from you a lot which is as you are always willing to do the work to actually go and meet them and humanize the person but i mean a lot of people in the internet can just see people as the wards they put in right you actually do have a clear idea that there is a human
in behind the keyboard and that's basic to us i guess but a lot of people that's not really a thing well and that's one of the challenges with like a site like matter of filter or anywhere else suddenly that i think none of does better but like medical care has just as much of a challenge with that it's anywhere it's like how do you get every buddy to be in that head space all the time how do you get
buddy to be trying to remember to be empathetic to try and stop and say oh i only have a couple of paragraphs on this person who i don't know and i'm having reactions to it that are based on sort of dealing with a blank slate instead of like thinking about why is this person saying what they're saying and what's the context i was coming from and you know it's like well an hour
it's like what if i would on that i yeah yeah yeah and and expecting everyone to do a tremendous amount of work and interpret things every time it's like unrealistic but fostering like going back to the idea of like what is the culture even encouraged in the first place you know your medical just not going to solve the problem of fact checking but better filter
can maybe continue to work cultural you to solve it's own problems of empathy and and sort of assumptions and and and they're going out someone's there you are touching one of the key things for me which is up
on a very basic level when we talk of all it was more the right honey
it's actually the best thing where you ask me want to kind of do your best to remind people that when you are discussing any subject right for you it can be if you already coal and that's it but for some other of people there is actually their life they it's actually affect them so you have
two if you burn that in mind that changes how you talk about it yeah right and i feel like a lot of the growth the site has shown over the years on a bunch of friends is
in it sort of accomplishing that culture like there is a much better general understanding on the site and general set of expectations about that than there have been in the early days of the site that you know like
conversation now versus fifteen twenty years ago on any number of topics you know you look back we will throw is like and people now are like hey no actually that's not cool
think having that codify
and you know and in terms of like you know the content policy the privacy policy that guidelines that you know what are micro aggressions gives you something to point to so that when you tell somebody hey maybe you need to kind of retool this because of this thing i feel like that is help
fall ah yeah gives the dark in the fall at sort of a jumping off point where they understand the expectations which i think is one of the things we've heard from users over and over that they prefer yes it it's not it's not that those documents by themselves solve the problem but those documents create a framework in which people can
better understand and better refer to throw the expectations of site and it becomes yeah sort of some some some bedrock and some some foundation for the individual user decisions and actions and attempts to reinforce a culture
cause like none of it happens unless people buy into it you could put up any list of rules and guidelines you want but if people don't take it seriously or don't care about it then or if moderation it's not going to back it up right i mean that twitter and all their trust and yeah yeah where it's like yeah sure buy like well that's not what you actually do so what does it mean to have died
documents that say
that that's what you're doing me that's actually one of the things that
that i mean i wish i could go on for hours about how it
let's use one a specific example let's talk about facebook for a second that we'd say hate to do both
it's one of those places where i can't tell you how many times i fled something because his ridiculous lead phobic right i want to say exactly the things they've seen but i mean things that you are like there was no way this is close to okay for any one yeah and then you plug it in them they're like yeah
nothing wrong let us go on just ignored them
yeah and the truck in ranked i mean how can we live in a world where
i sighed as big as them can do those things and things don't really care right that's
really interesting analysis of that talking about i don't even remember i think it was like serbia croatia and disputes right that that part of the issue is you had you know an out group that was being sort of online terrorized by n n group but the people who are moderating or more
more likely to be from the cultural background and from the language background of the in group and you know even if they
saw what was going on they might not have a particularly nuanced understanding of the debate but they also weren't at the table even if the level of having the power up being moderators and so you know i think i think this was even more of a deal ah you know what the right hand guy ah with with some of the stuff going on in
ah me and mar and you know the the people who were um or in in china with the weaker like you don't have weaker moderators at facebook you know you have chinese moderators who may be downplay the issues that are involved with sort of the week
eager sub population and you know it's the argument for having a much more diverse workforce and
trading them appropriately to sort of understand in group and out group dynamics which maybe if you've always been part of an in group
don't aren't even visible to you you know like i learned a lot them that have filtered just listening to people talk about white and and i'm not involved in the conversation but just reading along being like oh you know it's it's you know it's that this is water effect where like do i didn't even realize but listening to other people talk about it who are
different from me helped me learn and if i can also shut up while doing that i'm not also making it worse
and you know what i'm thinking there's booze goes back to revenue models and held businesses build because for example the way the words for a site the smallest made a filter which resulted of so everything is moderation how much care is put in there while i i am still
confirm experience cause i literally used to i i was the directly in touch with both trust and safety team of twitter and what they have been sexually people who will do it in bold great so they have to shove you reports like so many of them most of the time they have it's use to just blow up
go over to the amount of reports you get on very little of the idea seemed to actually learn the the shoes that are being report to and you don't have the knowledge through threats we handle all of that or the time of the research it exactly and so that's not sustainable in anyway yeah this was this was this was why it was left
and your mood go is like catching myself wanting to go into a long rant as i do about like
like you start typing loop about like how it's it's it's bizarre that like a platform as big as facebook is like letting this stuff happened and like it's partly because it's so big and it's partly because the way it got big was trying to make money off the thing there's there's no clear profitable way
due to do an ethical amount of moderation on any of the big social media platforms because they scaled in favor of gross and metrics and profit and we got him saying how like do we our foundation that we can actually scale up responsibly like who i remember as i remember about what
it was like seven years ago
i was at the well that creators headquarters and we were talking to and trust and safety team in one of the things that cross that to me was trucking if they had the wrong team of developers i fight from the normal development theme they had one just for trust and safety where they could request
tools and features of things to rebuild no time right sure
like oh those are amazing things than you can do with the resources you have but then you realize the that's just one side of the story right three of thing that your growing so fast and to the point where you no longer a character that much low things are happening then that are being said so you get to a point where
for what people say it's not that important this to the lowly those when people put bomb threats bomb threats in your sights right but that's as far as who you go and i'm like well that's that's very shitty yeah but look out okay not having bomb threats is is not unacceptably new wants barford
in fucking moderating in all
right
and remember remember when trump got banned from twitter and there was a whole bunch of like screenshots that were leaked of what their moderation tools looked like and i don't know about you folks but like i remember looking at them and being like this isn't even harry would like
no no no and and it gets to a point where it becomes very political now that you mentioned trump for example it's one of those things where i swear i wasn't there at the table but i'm pretty for that that decision was made chills because
of the public relations side of it if trump was saying that but he wasn't that feeds people they wouldn't have cared right yeah and that's the thing that it's concerning if you need the people who are at the table making the seizures to actually care about what people are
say enough about because of changes into a blueprint the entire website how it is and how it shapes how people see things right
yeah twitter when recently from like they're reporting i'm for it if you wanted to report it tweet it changed where it used to be you know quote using the reply feature to spam unquote was enough of a reason to report or block someone and now that same sort of ruler
guideline has been changed to using the reply feature repeatedly too so if somebody just reply to you with a whole bunch of like buy bitcoin crap you know you can still block them but you can't you know you're not going to get that account shut down and one would assume they aggregate those reports and there are some back
second mechanism will that will go to that but to what you were speaking to loop
the user doesn't see that and so all the user sees is the website doing nothing and they don't feel safer or protected a fucking like six click process to seemingly have nothing happen it's just it's lots of clicking and twitter
thing now i don't know if either of you to know about this but called bird watch which yeah i'd i've seen it yeah i've signed up for and what burke watch means is when you read a tweet that's like from somebody and at some garbage state and then you can add a comment to that tweet if you're part of the people in the bird watch
each beta that that then can get a value aided by the people and the bird watch
beta so that when somebody sees the tweet it has like a little like you know this has been you know read more about this or whatever and so somebody could be like you know this isn't true what they're saying here's a citation or they're saying this word but that's not what that word means like you can add contacts that might not be available
in the tweet itself now you know to be honest i think most people aren't going to be using it but it was really interesting especially with the supreme court decisions this week you know a lot of people are trying to sort of get their clicks on with hot takes about this that or the other but it's the first time since i've been involved in this
that you know i've had the ability to both at commentary but also evaluate others' commentary and for the most part
you know i sort of agree with what many people say that like the truce has a bit of a liberal bias or you know the liberal whatever that that i think there's a lot more people from the rate just making crap up and so it's interesting to see the kind of birdwatcher approach to that being able to sort of add facts and calm
and cherry without polluting the discourse with a lot of people yelling back and forth for example syria
and i don't know how you you know get on this beta or what you can do but i've been for me from a community moderation perspective it's very interesting seeing sort of how it's designed to work and it'll be more interesting to me if they do any public reporting on how it's actually working you know
and that's an interesting one because i mean needle comes down to resources right i'm sharon
sites like facebook and twitter like they are huge so they do have resources the bend years ago the month because of that is being creative
and how problematic it is or it can be and then you realize the the numbers than when we add up i mean you don't have enough people to actually review all the reports with the timing actually takes to actually make an informed decision when something but it's being reported two so we are seen a change in humanity
any anything no and rape know where these are all things that we as humans are trying to address and companies are trying to other esque in ways that i mean we have little bit of have the right answers to all of them
i remember back in the days where for example there was this trend where people were going into amazon to actually add reviews just for convenience purposes you know they weren't just funny reviews and you can find yeah still they're fun like milk jug reviews was one of the classical world
speck of
a group i could find out actually right i mean there are so many of them that are super funny but then you realize that you have a featured that was not intended for something like that than explodes right how do you face something like that and i mean particularly when it comes to the huge huge sides you'll see
read the i mean they are failing miserably and just because they see it from another perspective which is the main thing it's revenue in a not necessarily constant right
in that to me i mean that sucks it's i mean i can it's i definitely think it's a generational thing i was born in in a time where i was a teenager when things when came and i was like that who's going to change here friends saying it was going to make our lives perfect and
and well i mean well that they can't entertain address right like sure
oh
oh my
oh
well we are about a hour and ten minutes in here and just have one one one one one by my yeah yeah all sorts of good number of executives wanted sex i'm i don't know if we ah want to just keep your damn ring which is fine if we want to try
and
it feels almost a silly at this point to try new during normal a post content i'm sorry i found a link to some amazon reviews and that can be the one linked fail if we want to do it that way i also have a a shout out that i'm the job that i put up i believe it was oh my god this is neat starting to talk but
four i
on june second so when was the last cast
a trigger any fire
yeah so um i i think we were talking about this trash that i posted it a job for a rewrite of my stupid book list that was in antique p h p o j yoga from the arts and i'm i found a matter of filter user who
who took that job and did significantly more work than i was expecting that job to take but i guess it was a bigger job than i thought but he was a delight to work with and i'm that a project is now finished and i just wanted to give it a shot up to la mike who
who's username i of course don't know because i'm an actress
oh my god
we are professional podcast or i have been doing this for years i wasn't expecting to do this part of it and once your idea you know but oh man i forget what i have time i
just some nerds and i'm like and look is there any particular post anywhere on medical true that you liked in the last month or so knight would like would shout outs and now you
would you fix my stuff thank you so much it's great and i love it
i know around i now would what did you
night moves oh my god
that's what i was doing in high school i was listening to bob seger and the silver bullet band
nice is it
you know the polite thing to say i'm not
so interestingly enough now that you ask a boats posts that i'm interested in here's this thing as much as i love the blue eyes the most of maintaining ask and the red line saying no one's a reason why
it's because i actually think that you get like so specific questions you know things that are hyper specific and you get points of view that i'm like oh i never looked at it this way
so i literally most of my time in the side if not even seeing what is new but actually go back in time a scrolling back and see previews questions that i am like oh that's something i want to know more about and what what people have to say about that and that's where i spend most of my time
it comes to lose the thing is
i actually get to follow all of them and then it gets to a point where i am like
at this point in reality with the that a lot of it is very tight to things that are going on and i'm like do i wants to know more about what's going on with the world
you no absolutely this is i mean this is this is one of the things that have usually a great for me and having left the job is like the last couple of months i haven't really had to pay attention to any metal filter thread i didn't want to cause i wasn't moderating it and it turns out most of the threads i will be moderating are the ones that i'm
not paying attention to so like i'm looking for like the weird weird stuff posts in the art posts and the music posts and like oddball technology and occasional internet drama fractious and and like and being able to just put it down and walk away is fantastic as far as that goes
it's definitely i'm i'm enjoying myself on the blue a little bit more ah
the last couple of months as far as that goes i think you're right it definitely has a lot to do with the fact that your mother ate in a lot of them and then your you know that so so you assume the front position they're right yeah even though i have to invade observes this blows up to me it's weird cause they're doing
my day yourself and speaking in the site and reading things and then they i get to us with where i am like huh
my being a user right to or i'm not line
it's a it's a fucking i i tell you it's one of the biggest mind fuck for this job is like you know having to navigate your own understanding of your navigation of that space is a foot or a barroso yeah loop and i were talking about this during your a lengthy reap it too is trying to figure out like
what time that i'm spending interacting with you know loop or users or you or paperwork is you know work time and and what's just me being me which i would have been doing if i weren't also the nominal owner ups yet
roller though the invasion is not clear right now and
underestimating how much failing a terrible job as usual getting paid this is just this is ari of my life yeah i will work on it i have endeavored to work on it this is this is the sort of endemic to like this is kind of like the nature of the metal filters the effort of expense young i
i only ask her to report how many hours she worked and i report in the literal meetings that i went to and nothing else yeah and i was like okay come on you've been talking just for talking me you have friends like a life that i'm i'm i now fun i feel like i should count the pie catch because josh doesn't get paid
for those i don't think ah
i mean what what i worked there like it like it fell into all that that's one of the things i'm doing but like i never like pay myself up an hour early bonus for about goes yeah and let it filter used to pay for my phone and does not and that's fine ah for doing the podcast but yeah it's it's worth trying to pay more attention without also feeling like you know
i'd i'd bilking the sight of i don't know it's a difficult issue for me i should get some more and i'm in therapy like it's it's weird stupid a complicated emotional space lick of combat gets medical for hasn't been like you know riding high on a good budget in a long time so it's hard not to
buy produce of caring about the site wanted to do stuff for it because you care about it it's hard not to sort of discount like yeah but does that really really need like a dollar amount of work it's like yes you should get paid and also there's no money like you know how the about actually that's funny to me is because i have this thing where
or i had this conversation with lost certainly do during the transition and will dress them in now where i'm like no if you were there and knew were working you are supposed to pay for that right
but doing it to myself
right good luck
but it's tricky because i think you know there used to be kind of slash time when moderators if they had stuffed they were working on could do that during not their moderator time and so that's been i think corralled in a way yeah we we used to have the flexibility to just really throw some extra hours on like
by implication that was just a prank like i work on the essay you for an hour or so pay me for that even though it wasn't my might shift but it was hard to predict and as a result with the necessity of budgeting and also unless you're my chipped it's really super busy hopefully you can nest those things not that i reality but he had to do their job but but so that's been a change
i think i know for a fact that you would tell people have to
are you like to gary this josh know i might i have i just have terrible instincts as all hum
but yes it's a it's an interesting and and tricky can enter of trying to figure out how how this all works oh my god
sorry i thought the you know like it i was under with which is an electric bike it but i haven't turned it on i felt like it had turned itself on and i was going to die from sweat or thought it was gonna be like a squirrel report or something a squirrel report they are outside their climate all over the sioux it they're driving me crazy there's a goldfinch about that foot and a half for my nose up to
but i'm sorry but we're getting somewhere i'm good yeah go with that sorry i don't believe that no don't worry lloyd record executive that they just close my mind to cause i think one of the things that we've been getting way better ah yes literally the fact that that does not apply to you to us and man than myself
bolts to the other moderators with gotten to a point where it's like i think that they are in the post season or dating know exactly what they are focusing on so do the beach and it's clearer i asked for for both the undying it's like sometimes it requires us to be like all over the place right
it gets worse be before the wants of that everybody wants how to be all over the place and wear many hats now i think it's the case anymore
so that's getting better and that actually makes me happy very happy yeah you know i i agree i think that's i take that to a positive change and hopefully one that's that's good for the team in addition to just you know being acceptable and workable for you know the site and the users
yeah yeah that's not my problem anymore so please stop it
i'm not arguing i'm gonna make it your problem probably a couple more months to give out of my system if you haven't got regular wishful thinking or something like that on a farm
robert oh well what does it what do they say about like you know the you need like half as long as the relationship to recover from the break up for it
it like old i'll be fifty i'll be like completely chill about everything medical to related by them so i'm
i i want that for you josh
i'll get there i'm actually it's it's it's been good i like matches there but let's see if he feels the same way only cancel his netflix
he probably doesn't even fucking use other count either that's probably part of why
this is for people who have no idea what the fuck are we talking about like lupus looking over a pay pal stuff and found in that book storage and i was like hey your netflix on on on the trampoline can seem like a dodgy thing that you would do josh will get annoyed by five very pointedly not like put anything that wasn't explicitly work related
are there and now pulled all that off but like you know it's like well no i don't even have netflix anymore but it wouldn't have been on that thing could be mapped but we change all the bank accounts stuff with matt left so it wouldn't be what it was like the old pay pal account which has a gigantic storm of payments every month so finding one line item
especially if you're not looking for it which papal does not make it easy to like lupe has caught this big they've probably been there for you at least or at least for probably five years maybe more in then come on let's give you some credit the things that you you have to so many different things right for sure
but i'm also like oh that fucking netflix
let me have been looking at the numbers for the past month and a house or two my yeah every single day right wing magazine for it
thank you so much i mean it's it's one of those things where where you can do it just because of the support from everyone right to me and i see seeds and when i say this they actually mean and i can see a change in how the community is reacting to the things that we're too and i can i
have you every single day every time i reach out to josh heald like okay let me actually that this is not supposed to be my problem anymore but it actually let me help you
i read and everybody is helping right so it's not like come to end up the titanic but it's mostly like everybody is and that's to me it's amazing
the same be sure if you're not the long hair yeah keep keep it healthy maybe that's a good place to wrap it up
yeah actually actually you are touching week they didn't even mentioned the thing that i am that has the to me it's what it's making me super happy and the years i don't even want to think about all the amazing
worth that the term seasonal team has been put it in oh good yeah i can't believe that we didn't even mentioned that because to me it's been like how early do and and i am like they're doing great
but i mean literally
it's one of those things that even paying attention to where they are at eighth next rotation that i haven't had in the past two weeks right and i check in with them and everything but it's so much it's so much that it actually gives me a lot of perspective into how many of things just you were doing that i
i was like no i couldn't i couldn't have done any anything if it was exactly the same thing like you are going to be doing what josh was the way i would have run away with a
elaborate and i am to fucked up like you know it was also like hitting breaking points where the it was the stuff that i wasn't syria doing and get him out back into of all of it
yeah it was not sustainable so like i'm very very glad to hear that that balance is existing there and yeah no i i i've had be again i've had the pleasure of not having to keep real close track of it the transition team has know checked in with me about a couple of things but most of their i think when they're checking in it's wake like the continuing staff
and ah and yeah they've been doing a ton of good thoughtful work and trying to move this along and that's it's really fantastic and just thank you all for doing that work and making it possible for me to not like spend a couple of months dragging myself along and trying to come up with a framework or or a skeleton
nothing myself when i was already bad extremely done and there's been a really nice hum the the people who are calling for the survey there's been a really nice thread on met a talk a you know they're like look we're gonna change the stole a little bit if the review of these answers if that's okay with me
people and also
funny want to help change that
this is
actually been going really well people are people are super positive about it which is great and there are going to get a little bit of help from x other people to let them review it i know i've had like a really gratifying hum
you know back and forth ongoing email exchange with a paint and church just talking about you know kind of his view of transition team stuff and where it overlaps with my stuff and how i need to stop emailing him cause i'm doing too much work
yeah but you know it's it's just been it's been it's been gratifying to see a power being able to shift and i i ah b be in a different place and having a site still doing okay ah yeah and that the i mean that's part of what will make it possible to keep the sort of healthier future ballots like that that is the thing
if if no one person has to do everything then everyone can have a better shot at doing the things they are doing and that's like it's it sounds simple putting it out loud but like i recognize how much i was not like you following that thinking in practice you know when i worked there is still so it's yeah it's great i i'm i'm really
i'm i'm really happy to see things going along and and yeah
thank you all for that work and the other the survey data thing like dealing with qualitative survey data is a huge fucking past future ask like it is something it's a very good thing to get some extra hands on because like it's easy to underestimate how much work it will be i'm i'm i do
remember the favorite survey dressing when you shut up
i have a friend should have a low key my fight who has like bugged me literally every year about that like it stopped being a serious bug but at that later became a yearly ritual is like oh hey so when you gonna put up your favorites a survey data and like yeah i mean lightning saying that the data oh my god i find it hard to huge amount of data
and it was like just impossible to fucking get through in a reasonable way and which was not the important thing at the time and charge you
this was like two thousand eight so i was like still beat you and your mod so i was a senior mod but it was this was on that fault though yeah yeah and i i don't know that matt was never that interested in this sort of thing
take the entire point was not like favorites and that was a little bit more when the site was just like he made the decisions he added titles he you know launched a beta of travel filter that never went anywhere like there was a bunch of stuff he did just because it was and that's how it worked and that has changed i think
mostly for the better but there was a lot of grousing about favorites
i seem to recall
god i have serious really suppress this memory we could go down a rabbit hole this can be for another episode of that in black
there there there there's a lot we could do there hum but anyway there was a big argument about whether favorites are ruining the site or not and so in order to get some more data on it there was a survey the results of which were never really on that first day but that that came on the tail end of like experimentally hiding them which was the thing that got people so so so so
so angry introspect was like a real bold move cotton i'm data what i'm getting
that's it so it's a whole thing anyway
for
yeah we're having a nice time i'm just trying to make me not not that we stop so i can go to the bathroom
least asked me sane in here
the fact that i don't have all that you know i guess what i am down here for oh yes god bless you know from twenty years of fucking baggage was like a that's a healthy move for those like just in general is twenty twenty five twenty twenty twenty twenty two going on twenty three hey the birthday is coming up hey oh oh
it's the cyber i hope you elect me and i'm slowly i care like you have to really know
about the size it about how things improving change and everything sharp but the thing has as much as i care i don't have that many years of baggage
to get into weight right yeah yeah it's like vegas in the in the in the purest sense i don't regret having a long sense of history on medical can potentially be a resource now and then to all in that capacity but the begun to stay cause like yeah there's a lot of
you're you have feelings about your family but stop being sort of rational at a certain point because it's just the people you've lived with for so long it's the same thing happens with online communities would like you know there's a lot of people my family it's complicated
hum anyway yes all right well this has been fucking delightful and we talked about ah two medical filter posts and i feel like that's a trance so um why don't we wrap it up and ah it will ah figure out what happens next month or middle of next month if we want to alienate a bunch of people with
more video game talk
it's time to go talk to a nice lady
strategic planning in public libraries that's my next meeting like this is what loop thanks so much for coming on and being on and also you know for literally everything yeah i'm but this has been it's been a real pleasure i'm i'm glad we got to just like you hammer like this for a while
and ah i would be happy to ah have you on in the future as you are so inclined and thank you so much i mean for that matter you can decide what happens there
well i mean you know how when and how to reach me i'm liz you only hear a lot of those things where i'm glad to be here and mean i have no data isn't that trust me i need to have a penis and so many things right now that it into one of those
no they didn't that we were that were the no opinion squad we've come here and just have less freedom firm opinions for a while i'm all right well hey thanks everybody for listening and a that's a pod cast and er we'll do whatever we do next whenever we do it next next
