The longest thread in MetaFilter history is the May 15, 2013 MetaTalk longboat thread A post about metatalk hasn't been deleted yet, and I wonder why which has 8659 comments. For reasons that become obvious when the thread is read, this thread is sometimes referred to as the "alphabet thread." Its length, in part, resulted from a deliberate effort to break the record for longest thread.

The second longest thread in MetaFilter history is the November 6, 2012 Presidential election post which amassed 8185 comments. While no longer the longest thread in MetaFilter history, it remains the longest thread posted to the front page. It surpassed the previous record holder, my job is not to worry about those people, about a leaked video from a private fundraiser for Presidential nominee Mitt Romney, posted on September 17, 2012 with 5817 comments. Prior to the Romney leaked video thread, the previous record holder was the 5555 comment Sarah Palin thread about the Vice Presidential nominee pick of Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, created on August 29th, 2008. While the Sarah Palin thread is no longer the longest thread, it held the record for more than four years, a period greater than any record holder prior or since. Prior to the Sarah Palin thread, for the three years the title of the longest thread in MetaFilter history was held successively by two MetaTalk threads, the last of which was the MetaTalk Sans Quoi? thread which held the record from March 10, 2008 to August 29, 2008.
